Wednesday’s best TV: Trust and The Parachute Murder Plot

Thank God for Donald Sutherland, who plays the notorious billionaire J Paul Getty in the American series Trust. Just past the halfway point of a 10-episode run, the depiction of one of the world’s most famous kidnapping stories has descended into a barrage of melodrama held back only by the octogenarian star’s expert juggling of pain and pleasure. Those yet to catch up with the first five episodes may already have a vague understanding of the real-life story: John Paul Getty III, the teenage grandson of the oil magnate, has been abducted. Dear old grandad, pragmatic to the point of callousness, has declined to pay the ransom. John’s father, J Paul Getty Jr, is angry and nihilistic, seeking relief in parties and narcotics. His mother Gail is inconsolable and yet steely, maintaining her elegant façade but falling apart within. Both are struggling with the knowledge that their boy would come home if only his stubborn grandfather would make a withdrawal inconsequential to his vast fortune. Now, though, it may be too late: a body has been found on the beach, charred beyond recognition but wearing John Paul’s shoes, and the discovery sends shockwaves across the dynasty.
