Image credits: Getty Images Everyone from the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to Viola Davis, Margot Robbie and Glenn Close have descended upon London’s Royal Albert Hall for the 2019 British Academy Film Awards, best known as the BAFTAs. While it was the likes of The Favourite’s Olivia Coleman and Rachel Weisz, together with Bohemian Rhapsody’s Rami Malek and Green Book’s Mahershala Ali who won awards for their accomplishments in film, it was Thandie Newton, Cate Blanchett, and Letitia Wright who received the Vogue team’s votes for best dressed on the red carpet. The 72nd annual ceremony, hosted by BAFTA Fellowship Award winner and Absolutely Fabulous actress Joanna Lumley, saw outfits fit into two camps: either detailed and over-the-top or rather refined. Take Irina Shayk and Letitia Wright’s power suits, both favourites of the Vogue team, versus Timothée Chalamet’s matching combo and Lucy Boynton’s two-tone number. Melissa McCarthy’s polished look and Crazy Rich Asians star Michelle Yeoh’s bold Elie Saab gown impressed Vogue’s digital editor, while Eleanor Tomlinson’s Ralph & Russo dress and Stacy Martin’s Dior look caught the eye of the team’s digital editorial director. Similarly, Davis’s velvet black Giorgio Armani gown was a favourite of Vogue’s fashion features and content strategy director, and Wright in Stella McCartney proved a win for our junior market editor.
