Denver’s proposed fee for single-use bags is just the beginning of what City Council President Jolon Clark envisions as a “war on plastics.” And it’s an overdue war, he said. Denver lags behind many cities both statewide and nationally in the increasingly popular sustainability movement. Cities such as Seattle and San Francisco have already diminished their environmental footprints with bans and fees on plastic bags and are now taking aim at plastic straws and take-home food containers. At least 13 Colorado cities have already enacted fees or bans on plastic bags.“I hope we’ll go from the dinosaur in the room, taking on bags, to finally being a progressive leader on this issue at the city level and the state level,” Clark said. The council will host a public hearing on the proposed fees Dec. 16. Mayor Michael Hancock supports the measure, which could come into effect in July, though he threatened to veto a similar measure in 2013. Flare-Up Over Food-Delivery Fees Has South Koreans Debating The Marketplace Model
South Korea is no stranger to controversy over its Internet policies. The country still mandates virus protection and security measures that essentially require the use of Internet Explorer and Windows, and the government has one of the most aggressive Internet policing bureaucracies in the democratic world. The Economist has called the country an “Internet dinosaur” despite its world-leading mobile and bandwidth penetration rates. Yet, a recent controversy over food-delivery apps here has all the ingredients for a wider discussion over the cost of technological progress in this highly connected country. Every city has its vices, and in Seoul, one of those vices is late-night fried chicken delivery. In residential neighborhoods here, dozens of fried chicken stores compete for the late-night snack crowd, offering a bountiful array of chicken options (my favorite is the “snowing chicken” – deep-fried chicken covered in sprinkled cheese). Chicken is … [Read more...] about Flare-Up Over Food-Delivery Fees Has South Koreans Debating The Marketplace Model
Boulder ponders raising grocery bag fee to reduce use
In the first year after Boulder added a 10-cent fee in 2013 on all disposable paper and plastic grocery bags, the number of bags used dropped by 69 percent. But that number hasn’t changed in the past two years and now Boulder is considering whether to raise the fee to 20 cents per bag. “It’s just not doing much anymore,” said Jamie Harkins, Boulder sustainability coordinator. “A lot of communities see an initial little drop and then it grows. We had a much bigger initial reduction in bag use but it kind of stayed there.” The city’s options are limited, the DailyCamera reports. Boulder can’t raise the fee beyond 20 cents — the ceiling identified in a study ahead of the fee’s implementation — as it’s illegal to set a fee based on desired behavioral changes; that’s the function of a tax. And under state law, the city can’t outright prohibit the use or sale of any plastic materials or … [Read more...] about Boulder ponders raising grocery bag fee to reduce use
Implementation of cashless policy is in public interest–Emefiele
By Mustapha Sumaila, Abuja Mr. Godwin Emefiele the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says the implementation of cashless policy in six states of the federation is in public interest to promote an efficient payment system. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that CBN on Tuesday issued a circular to deposit banks to commence the implementation of the cashless policy in six pilot states across the country. The apex bank directed that implementation should commence from Sept 18 in Lagos, Ogun, Kano, Abia, Anambra, and the Rivers States, as well as the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Zee World unveils exciting line up for 2020 Stop distracting Okowa, let him work — Gbagi It, however, stated that the nationwide implementation of the cashless policy would take effect from March 31, 2020. The CBN explained that transactions will attract … [Read more...] about Implementation of cashless policy is in public interest–Emefiele
Drivers paying hundreds more for car insurance if they’re renting or DIVORCED as comparison sites ‘assume they’re more likely to claim’
DRIVERS are being ripped off hundreds of pounds as comparison sites think they'll claim more from their insurance - if they don't own their home or are divorced. These sites are collecting seemingly irrelevant information from their customers which, in turn, have an influence on premiums. Which? found that quotes were around four per cent cheaper if the driver was a homeowner and also four per cent more expensive if they were divorced, as opposed to being married. The problem is that these sites don't go into as much detail as an insurer would if you went direct, an investigation by consumer group Which? reveals. They also fail to be transparent in explaining to the drivers the factors that have influenced their premiums. While some car insurers, for example, offer discounts of as much as 15 per cent for dashcam owners, only one of the four major comparison sites gave drivers the chance to specify whether they owned one or not.Which? also found that while it is compulsory to declare … [Read more...] about Drivers paying hundreds more for car insurance if they’re renting or DIVORCED as comparison sites ‘assume they’re more likely to claim’
Euro 2016: Nani outshines Portugal teammate Ronaldo
IMAGE: Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo looks dejected. Photograph: Rafael Marchante/Reuters. Portugal’s Nani is poised to make his 99th appearance for his country in a crunch clash with Hungary on Wednesday and has been an automatic choice for the Selecao for a decade, yet there is a feeling the forward has not fulfilled his dazzling potential. Nani, blessed with searing pace, mesmerisingly quick feet and more tricks than a children’s entertainer, will turn 30 in November and Euro 2016 could give the Fenerbahce star the platform for a transfer back to one of Europe’s elite leagues. Scorer of Portugal’s sole goal at the tournament – a neat finish in a 1-1 draw with Iceland – Nani has so far outperformed his captain and former Manchester United team mate Cristiano Ronaldo although he should have added to his tally of 18 international goals in Saturday’s stalemate against Austria.Nani’s 12th-minute angled drive forced a fine save from the … [Read more...] about Euro 2016: Nani outshines Portugal teammate Ronaldo
