The 108-win Red Sox and 100-win Yankees begin their best-of-five American League Division Series Friday night in Boston, the fourth postseason series ever between the two iconic franchises. Given that the high tension of the last two meetings — the 2003 ALCS, won by the Yankees, and the Red Sox’ cathartic redemption in the ALCS a year later — negatively affected the life span of anyone with an emotional interest, it has to be healthy to talk about what to expect in this one. So let’s talk it out, Q&A style, just between me and the hypothetical and rather sarcastic you. First question . . . The Red Sox and Yankees? Sheesh, not these guys again. That’s not a question, that’s a statement. But at least you didn’t start it by saying, “Talk about . . .’’ like so many of my reporter friends do. Drives me nuts. Everything in the form of a question, please. Carry on, my wayward son. OK, Trebek, here’s my … [Read more...] about 10 questions about the Red Sox-Yankees series, answered

Or flown. Taking a noon train from New York didn’t go so well. It took so long getting to Beantown that the Yankees canceled a scheduled late-afternoon workout at Fenway Park. “I actually drove up, so I was here, but I guess it was a pretty slow-moving train that just kind of added to the travel adventures of the 2018 Yankees,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. The Boston Red Sox. The New York Yankees. It doesn't get any better than this. Longtime storied and bitter rivals will meet in postseason for a fourth time, a first in a best-of-five series. The others were all best-of-seven. The last time the Red Sox and Yankees squared off in a playoff matchup was 14 years ago. New York won the 1999 AL Championship Series 4-1 over Boston before both teams had pair of epic ALCS struggles back-to-back years in 2003 and 2004. New York won a heated 2003 classic at home on an extra-inning homer in Game 7 by Aaron Boone, now the team's rookie manager, off Tim Wakefield. The next year, David Ortiz, Curt Schilling and Johnny Damon led the Red Sox to an unprecedented comeback from a 3-0 deficit with a Game 7 win at Yankee Stadium. Boston went on to win World Series for the first time in 86 years. Both teams also played the famous regular-season tiebreaker for 1978 AL East title at Fenway Park after New York made up a huge deficit in the standings down the … [Read more...] about Red Sox or Yankees? Tempers flared. Fists flew. A beloved bench coach went tumbling on the turf. Criminal charges were filed. That last one is not hyperbole, folks. Charges. Were. Filed. And that's just the shenanigans that happened outside the lines. Managers lost their minds. The games lasted forever. An All-Star third baseman tried to play patty-cakes while running the bases but no one else was playing. RODRIGUEZ ARROYO MIENTKIEWICZ So much crazy stuff happened that it is almost inconceivable that it all took place in a span of two Octobers. But it did. These two old rivals … [Read more...] about Yankees-Red Sox: 9 rules to avoid a baseball Armageddon
