Democrat Andrew Gillum ended his hard-fought campaign for Florida governor Saturday with just hours remaining for counties to turn in official recount results, conceding to a Republican whose party has held that office since 1999. Gillum, in a video he posted on Facebook, congratulated Republican Ron DeSantis and also vowed to remain politically active even though his term as mayor of the Florida capital of Tallahassee ends next week. Of his future plans, Florida’s first African-American nominee for governor said: “stay tuned.” The announcement came just hours before Florida’s counties must turn in their official results after tense days of recounting ballots in both the gubernatorial and a U.S. Senate contest — two nationally watched midterm elections that have keep the presidential swing state on edge since Election Day. “This has been the journey of our lives,” said Gillum, appearing in the video with his wife, R. close Video President Trump calls out Dems on border control During a 'Make America Great Again' rally, President Trump says that the Democrats will 'erase our borders.' President Trump was back on the campaign trail Saturday evening campaigning for Republicans in Florida in a quest to get more members of his party elected during next week’s midterm elections. The president’s stop in Florida -- he made it alongside Vice President Mike Pence -- was to boost support for Republican Gov. Rick Scott, who is running for the Senate, and Rep. Pence, who took the stage ahead of Trump, described Scott as “a proven leader” and DeSantis as “one of our strongest supporters in Congress.” “Rick Scott and Ron DeSantis will stand with this president and they’ll … [Read more...] about Trump rallies for Florida Republicans, says Dems are wielding ‘a giant wrecking ball’
Democrats have pulled ahead in Florida's marquee races for the US Senate and governor, a new Reuters opinion poll showed on Wednesday, as President Donald Trump returned to the battleground state in a closing bid to bail out Republicans. US Senator Bill Nelson is leading Rick Scott, Florida's Republican governor, by 5 percentage points among likely voters, according to the Reuters/Ipsos/UVA Center for Politics poll. Most opinion polls and forecasters give Democrats a slim chance of winning control of the chamber, because they have to defend 10 seats in states that Trump won in 2016, including Florida. Addressing a crowd in Estero, Florida, Trump reeled off his usual attacks on the Democrats, saying they stood for high taxes, crime, open borders and uncontrolled immigration. It was the first stop on a six-day, eight-state, … [Read more...] about Trump campaigns for Florida Republicans as poll shows Democratic gains
