(CNN)At least 58 people were killed this week when a boat carrying dozens of migrants sank in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Mauritania, the International Organization for Migration said Thursday. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said 83 survivors swam to the shore after Wednesday's sinking and were being assisted by its officials in the northern city of Nouadhibou. An unspecified number of injured people were taken to a hospital, and others are being helped by authorities in Mauritania and officials representing the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, according to IOM. Notorious storms getting worse, cause billions in damage across California
Atmospheric river storms like the one pounding California this week are becoming more intense and cost Western states roughly $1 billion in damage annually, according to a report on the weather phenomenon. The storms, which carry moisture from the tropics to the mid-latitude regions, have caused some of California’s biggest deluges. But when a storm passes, what’s left in its wake?In the study published Wednesday in the journal Science Advances, scientists found that from 1978 to 2017, atmospheric rivers caused $42.6 billion in flood damage in 11 Western states — 84% of the estimated total water-related damage of $50.8 billion. That’s roughly $1.1 billion in damage done by atmospheric rivers every year.“Research has shown that these storms are going to become more intense over the coming decades,” said Tom Corringham, one of the authors of the study by the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. … [Read more...] about Notorious storms getting worse, cause billions in damage across California
‘Let It Bleed’: Why the Stones’ Nastiest Masterpiece Feels Right on Time
December 1969: The Rolling Stones are capping off their decade of triumph with a new album. It’s called Let It Bleed. The songs ooze doom, death, darkness, and destruction. Right from the start, it’s an album full of bad news, from the opening guitar shivers of “Gimme Shelter.” “That’s a kind of end-of-the-world song, really. It’s apocalypse; the whole record’s like that,” Mick Jagger told Jann S. Wenner in his 1995 Rolling Stone interview. “It’s a very rough, very violent era. The Vietnam War. Violence on the screens. Pillage and burning.” Fifty years after it came out, Let It Bleed sounds timelier than ever. Amid all the chaos, the Stones made a masterpiece that holds up as the ultimate rock & roll album for bleak times, which is why it feels like the most 2019 album of 1969. Their darkest album, yet also their funniest — not to mention their greatest. They dropped Let It Bleed in the final days of a … [Read more...] about ‘Let It Bleed’: Why the Stones’ Nastiest Masterpiece Feels Right on Time
Ice Cube and Kevin Hart: ‘Hollywood is realising that black people go to movies’
You might think that Kevin Hart, the most successful stand-up comedian in the US, and Ice Cube, who produced Straight Outta Compton, the highest-grossing non-franchise film of the US summer blockbuster season, would resent spending a balmy Sunday morning in Los Angeles filming personalised messages to cinema audiences in London, Birmingham and Manchester, extolling the virtues of their buddy cop sequel, Ride Along 2. Hart and Cube do not see it that way. “You’re looking at two guys who are very adamant about wanting international success,” says Hart, who sits next to Ice Cube on a black leather couch deep in the bowels of a Hollywood photographic studio. “The one thing you’ve got to respect about the two guys sitting in front of you is that we’re not content. We’re both very successful in our own right, but we want more.” Their Ride Along chemistry sets Cube’s trademark glower and scowl against Hart’s puppy-dog enthusiasm. … [Read more...] about Ice Cube and Kevin Hart: ‘Hollywood is realising that black people go to movies’
