Virginia 10th district
A CONGRESSIONAL district in the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC was ill-disposed towards Donald Trump long before a bicyclist flashed the president the middle finger as his motorcade rolled toward his golf course last October. A photograph of the gesturing cyclist went viral. This November, an enduring distaste for Mr Trump in the 10th District, where the golf club is located, could determine a closely watched contest between a nimble Republican incumbent, Barbara Comstock (pictured left), and her Democratic challenger, Jennifer Wexton (pictured right), a state senator and former prosecutor. So is Virginia, the only Southern state not won by Mr Trump in 2016. The 10th hasn’t elected a Democrat to the House of Representatives for 36 years, but several polls show Mrs … [Read more...] about A Democrat leads in Virginia’s 10th
New polling from Virginia Rep. Barbara Comstock’s campaign shows a closer race in the 10th District than recent public polling would suggest. Comstock led Democratic state Sen. Jennifer Wexton 48 to 47 percent in the survey by McLaughlin & Associates. Only 5 percent of voters were undecided. The poll surveyed 400 likely voters from Oct. 6-8 with 41 percent of interviews conducted via cell phone. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points. In its polling memo to the campaign, McLaughlin notes that Comstock is in better shape now than she was at the same point in 2016. This is the first time the Comstock campaign has released internal numbers in either cycle, and it comes amidst a narrative that Comstock, a two-term Republican, is facing troubling re-election prospects in a district Hillary Clinton won by 10 points in 2016. The fall matchup in one of this year’s most competitive House races is now set with state Sen. Jennifer Wexton clinching the Democratic nomination in Virginia’s 10th District on Tuesday night. Wexton will face Republican incumbent Barbara Comstock, who’s running for a third term in a Toss-up race. With 64 percent of precincts reporting, she led a six-way Democratic primary field with 44 percent of the vote when The Associated Press called the race. As the only elected official running in the primary, Wexton started with a name recognition advantage since she already represents part of the 10th District. She ran with the backing of Gov. Ralph S. Northam and local elected officials, and had the endorsement of The Washington Post, an influential voice in the well-educated affluent district in the D.C. suburbs. Wexton defeated four other women Tuesday, including former State Department official Alison Friedman, who nearly doubled the winner in spending. (Friedman had … [Read more...] about Wexton Wins Democratic Nod to Take On Comstock in Virginia’s 10th
After the shootings at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., many political pundits speculated that the midterm election cycle would be dominated by the issue of guns. They expected students and activists to swarm districts, shaming Congress into acting, if not for moral reasons then for the overriding rationale of political survival. We’ll know soon. Within the next few weeks, school will be out for most of the country. College and high school commencements will have concluded. Summer vacation will be in full swing, but there’ll be a new political science test for student activists. Will their predicted political energy surge or dissipate? Will it be applied with pinpoint precision or will it be scattered and, therefore, diluted? I’m betting on the students to pass these tests. But here’s a study guide of five districts where their energy matters the most this summer. Virginia, 10th District — In the suburbs and exurbs of Washington, … [Read more...] about Will guns be an issue in midterms? You can bet on it in these districts
