BRUNSWICK, Ohio -- The City of Brunswick will hold its annual Veterans Day ceremonies at 11:11 a.m. Nov. 9 at City Hall. But Brunswick had a warm-up for Veterans Day on Oct. 17, when more than 150 of the city's veterans took part in a show of appreciation that has become a unique tradition for the city. "The most fulfilling part is the recognition -- you could see this was going to be more than a free meal," Emil Stecki said of Brunswick's second annual Veterans' Appreciation Breakfast. Stecki, who served in the United States Army Military Police from 1961 to 1964, said such events show how the city goes above and beyond for its veterans. "It comes down to the leadership of our fine city and the personal touch of doing so much more than planting a plaque at City Hall commemorating those who served," he said. "The personal touch of voicing their appreciation to the veterans was obviously appreciated." Steve Pokin Springfield News-Leader Published 4:08 p.m. UTC Jul 4, 2018 Joe Bob Fuller delivers meals two days a week. I watched him do it Tuesday morning. It's pretty simple. He puts the meals in a box in the back seat of his wife's white 2015 Hyundai — the one with the fish logo and tandem bike sticker on the back. I was with him as he drove to seven homes in the northwest part of the city and delivered eight meals — the final delivery was to a couple in their 80s. At times, he was invited in, along with me and photographer Nate Papes. Once, he left the meal in a cooler at the front door. And a couple of times he handed lunch to a grateful recipient, exchanged pleasantries at the door and left. "Have a blessed day," is what he said at his departures. It took him all of 90 minutes. He is one of about 130 drivers for Meals on Wheels in Springfield. “It’s an hour out of my life," he tells me. "It is a good service.
