AMERICAN FORK, Utah — Jon McNaughton did not intend to become the country’s most famous pro-Trump, mass-market painter of the 21st century. But then, to achieve such an identity does require a modicum of cultivation; it does not happen overnight. In 2008, the Utah artist was selling landscapes out of a gallery in a shopping mall. Then the presidential election happened and McNaughton, who didn’t like John McCain or Barack Obama, was struck with inspiration. This is for Rose. She is a nice lady who wrote me a nice email in which she spoke about the need to try to understand Donald Trump’s supporters. As Rose put it, “We need to not close ourselves off to how the other side thinks.”It’s a sentiment I hear a lot from progressives, and it bespeaks a great generosity of spirit. But I couldn’t disagree more.Don’t get me wrong. In normal times it’s a trait I would applaud with enthusiasm. But these are not normal times. Indeed, sometimes, I wonder if we appreciate just how abnormal — how fraught with danger — they really are. Under Trump, American laws, news media and more are under assault, to say nothing of American democracy itself. And I’m sorry, but I don’t think “understanding” Trump … [Read more...] about Do we need to ‘understand’ Trump supporters?

Like no other presidential candidate in history, Donald Trump showed us exactly who he was during his hateful and divisive campaign. From attacking everyone from gold star families to the late John McCain to the “grab them by the p***y” scandal — but some women still decided to vote for Trump. SEE ALSO: Texas Cop Shoots Unarmed Black Man For Entering His Own Truck In a CNN sit down with female Trump supporters, there were regrets expressed about their vote. A panelist named Ally Bross said, “It starts with talking about women’s face lifts, I think. It’s disrespectful. If Tuesday’s midterm is a referendum on President Trump, as The New Yorker and other publications have argued, Colorado Congressman Scott Tipton may have an easy path to victory. Tipton, seeking his fifth term in the House in the red-leaning, rural 3rd Congressional District, votes in line with Trump 95.6 percent of the time. Trump won here by about 12 points in 2016. “[Trump’s] agenda is popular,” Laureen Gutierrez, chairwoman of the Mesa County Republican Party. Republican voters in the sprawling 3rd CD, Gutierrez said, like the president’s efforts to strengthen border security and back his appointment of Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. During the primary, she said, the No. 1 thing people wanted to know was which candidates supported the Trump. Tipton did not respond to an interview request with The Colorado Independent, but told The Cortez Journal he supports Trump’s tax cuts and deregulatory efforts, although he disagrees … [Read more...] about Trump support could be strong in this rural Colorado district — a good sign for Congressman Scott Tipton
