POLITICS 06/24/2018 12:08 pm ET The state lawmaker who defeated Rep. Mark Sanford in this month's GOP primary was in a car hit by a wrong-way driver. By Nina Golgowski Katie Arrington, whose support from President Donald Trump fueled her defeat of U.S. Rep. Mark Sanford in South Carolina’s Republican primary this month, remained hospitalized Sunday with critical injuries after a deadly car crash Friday night. The 47-year-old member of the South Carolina House of Representatives was traveling with a friend to Hilton Head for a Saturday morning awards ceremony when their vehicle was struck by a wrong-way driver. That driver was killed, and the friend driving the car in which Arrington was a passenger also was injured. Arrington suffered broken ribs, a fracture in her back and a collapsed artery in her leg, her campaign said on Twitter. She underwent surgery to remove part of her small intestine and a portion of her colon. She is expected to be … [Read more...] about House Candidate Katie Arrington Critically Injured In South Carolina Crash

Trump to test his powers in South Carolina runoff

June 23, 2018 by arkansasonline Leave a Comment

COLUMBIA, S.C. — President Donald Trump's effort to bend the Republican Party to his will faces its next test Tuesday, when South Carolina voters choose between two GOP gubernatorial candidates who both claim to be Trump acolytes. The president has already made his pick: incumbent Gov. Henry McMaster, a longtime Trump supporter who failed to win the GOP primary outright earlier this month. McMaster is waging a runoff campaign against businessman John Warren, a first-time politico who some see as more like Trump himself. Like so much in Trump's world, the race is coming down to a question of loyalty. The White House is throwing everything at its disposal into the race to save McMaster, who went out on a political limb for Trump at a crucial point in the 2016 Republican presidential primaries. Trump issued several tweets over the past week praising the governor and noting his loyalty. He dispatched Vice President Mike Pence to the state on Saturday. The president himself will stump … [Read more...] about Trump to test his powers in South Carolina runoff

Trump critic Mark Sanford falls in South Carolina GOP primary

June 12, 2018 by edition Leave a Comment

Washington (CNN)Rep. Mark Sanford, a South Carolina Republican who's a critic of President Donald Trump, will lose his GOP primary to his conservative challenger, state Rep. Katie Arrington, CNN projects. The outcome -- one that national Republicans working on House races said as recently as Tuesday morning they did not anticipate -- is another sign that GOP primary voters are rejecting lawmakers who break with Trump. Trump endorsed Arrington hours before the polls closed Tuesday in a tweet attacking Sanford for being "very unhelpful to me in my campaign to MAGA." Last week in Alabama, GOP Rep. Martha Roby -- who had called on Trump to exit the 2016 race after the "Access Hollywood" tape became public -- was held under 50% in her primary and forced into a runoff. On Tuesday night, Sanford told supporters gathered in Mount Pleasant, "I've always been a realist, and at this point, based on the numbers I see, I think that I'll end up losing this election." Republican Sanford loses in South Carolina after Trump urges his…

June 12, 2018 by reuters Leave a Comment

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Representative Mark Sanford, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, lost a Republican congressional primary in South Carolina after Trump urged voters to punish Sanford’s disloyalty by tossing him from office. A few hours before polls closed on Tuesday, Trump tweeted that Sanford was “nothing but trouble” and “very unhelpful to me.” He backed Sanford’s pro-Trump challenger, state Representative Katie Arrington, for November’s congressional elections. Arrington, who made a campaign issue of Sanford’s criticism of Trump, won 50.6 percent of the vote to Sanford’s 46.5 percent. That just crossed the 50 percent threshold to avoid a runoff later this month between the top two contenders. The South Carolina race was a highlight of Tuesday’s primary voting in five states. Nevada, North Dakota, Maine and Virginia also chose candidates for the midterm election on Nov. 6, when Democrats hope to capture a … [Read more...] about Republican Sanford loses in South Carolina after Trump urges his…
