U.S. Donald Trump The anonymous op-ed written by a “senior administration official” and published by The New York Times is fueling a long-running conspiracy theory among supporters of President Donald Trump regarding the so-called “deep state” working against him. According to the “deep state” theory, pernicious Washington insiders and operatives run the administration in pursuit of their own goals and agenda, despite the wishes of whoever is elected, in a kind of undemocratic shadow government. Many Trump die-hards think this hidden bureaucracy is undermining the president and his policies. The president even believes this theory himself, having tweeted several times about the “deep state.” In the op-ed, the unnamed insider admits that some aides are “working diligently from within to frustrate parts of his agenda and his worst inclinations,” and that most senior officials “are working to insulate their operations from … [Read more...] about Anonymous NYT Op-ed Gives Paranoid Trump Supporters Ammo for Their Deep State Conspiracy Theory

Donald Trump supports efforts to improve background checks for gun purchases, the White House has said. The US president spoke to Republican senator John Cornyn about a bipartisan bill to strengthen the FBI’s database of people prohibited from buying guns. White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said: "While discussions are ongoing and revisions are being considered, the President is supportive of efforts to improve the Federal background check system."
