In that time, tens of trillions of dollars of value was wiped off global stock gauges, corporate borrowing costs exploded, and access to short-term funding all but evaporated. It was nothing to what was happening in the real world. On Feb. 19, when the S&P 500 Index was at its peak, the US had about a dozen confirmed cases of the coronavirus. Now America has the highest number of infections in the world and more than 1,000 dead. That global markets just had a decent week despite all that can make chronicling their progress seem like a callous undertaking.
