A car washer smashed a rugby star's Bentley into a shopper leaving him with horrific injuries - including an ear which needed stitching back on. Paul Bordache, who died not have a driving licence, was branded "highly reckless" by a judge after he crashed into Michael Collins, 66. The accident on December 22 left the victim with eight broken ribs, a fractured skull and vertebrae, an ear which needed stitching back on, and an urgent blood transfusion to keep him alive. Bordache, 39, was moving the £60,000 Bentley - which belonged to former St Helens rugby league star Ian Pickavance - into place at a Tesco store in St Helens, the Liverpool Echo reports. He hit the accelerator instead of the brake, sending it careering forward. Six cars were also damaged. Mr Pickavance had left his Bentley with the Waves car wash staff while he did some shopping. Australian star Billy Slater said Wednesday he was stepping away from rugby league after 16 years, as coaches and peers hailed the Melbourne Storm fullback’s journey to the top of the game. An emotional Slater told reporters he did not take the decision to hang up his boots lightly but was comfortable with calling it a day after the current National Rugby League season ends in September. I feel so very lucky to have the career I have had,” the 35-year-old said. “Eighteen years ago I made the decision to pack my car up and chase my dream. Melbourne legend Billy Slater is set to announce his retirement from rugby league with the 2018 NRL season to be his last. The 35-year-old fullback will hold a press conference in Melbourne at 1pm on Wednesday. The Storm had hoped that Slater would continue for another season but the former Queensland and Australia star has decided to call time on his career. Slater made his NRL debut with Melbourne in 2003 and has since played 313 games, overcoming two shoulder reconstructions that interrupted his career. His bulging trophy cabinet contains two NRL premierships, two Clive Churchill Medals and a Dally M Medal. Slater was also a key member of Queensland’s State of Origin dominance and was a part of eight series’ victories, playing 31 games.
