Red Star Belgrade ground out a 0-0 home draw against Napoli on the Serbian side's Champions League debut as their goalkeeper Milan Borjan made a flurry of telling saves in a pulsating Group C clash on Tuesday. The visitors twice hit the woodwork and missed a string of chances, leaving their manager Carlo Ancelotti frustrated after dropping points in a tough group that also includes Liverpool and Paris St Germain. "It was close, we just lacked the final spark," said Ancelotti, who also praised Borjan and refused to criticise his players. "We failed to win an important game but there are still five more to go and we can beat anyone. We made little mistakes in passing and shooting and were unlucky too." Red Star's Australia international defender Milos Degenek was overwhelmed by the atmosphere. "I almost broke down to tears when I heard the roar from the terraces," he told reporters. "It was a dream come true. It was a tough game, we fought hard and had to defend for very long spells. We … [Read more...] about Champions League debutants Red Star FC hold Napoli to 0-0 draw
Red Star Belgrade fans have been banned from travelling to their Champions League meeting with Liverpool in October by Uefa. The Serbian club’s supporters will be unable to attend their side’s next two away fixtures in the competition after on Friday being hit by disciplinary action. Europe’s football governing body have acted after a pitch invasion took place in the aftermath of Red Star’s playoff victory over FC Salzburg last month, which was sealed courtesy of a 2-2 draw in Austria. Uefa also cited supporters for letting off fireworks and throwing objects. Fans will now be unable to attend their team’s trip to face Paris Saint-Germain on October 3, and the fixture at Anfield on October 24. The club have also been hit with a €30,000 fine and ordered to pay damages to FC Salzburg. Liverpool will now be able to fill Anfield exclusively with home supporters for Red Star’s visit, their third game in Group C which also includes Napoli. … [Read more...] about Boost for Liverpool as Uefa ban Red Star Belgrade fans from UCL clash
Benfica, PSV Eindhoven and Red Star Belgrade have secured the final spots in the draw for the group stage of the Champions League. Salzburg failed in their 11th attempt to qualify for the group stage.Red Bull Salzburg, who due to UEFA rules are referred to as “FC Salzburg” in European play, blew a 2-0 lead at home to Red Star Belgrade on Wednesday, playing to a 2-2 draw, which saw the 1991 European champions advance on the away-goals rule. This was the 11th time that the Austrians have failed to advance from qualifying for the Champions League — in five of those cases they tripped at the final hurdle. Elsewhere, two-time European champions Benfica came from behind to cruise 4-1 away to PAOK to progress 5-2 on aggregate while PSV defeated BATE Borisov of Belarus 3-0 on the night and 6-2 overall. The losers of Wednesday’s matches enter the Europa League group stage. Saturday Night Live at Providence Park. Star studded and hella fun! The Portland Thorns made a two-goal comeback to tie the Chicago Red Stars 2-2 on Saturday night. HOLY HOT DAMN—WE GOT OURSELVES A PLAYOFF PRESS! This was the Thorns first home game in over a month and fans were absolutely MANIACAL about their return. RED SMOKE MADNESS! I for one have been looking forward to this match. Sure, the summer has been great (wildfire smokey and white wine spritzer heavy) out here in Portland—but nothing beats a summer Saturday with a Thorns game to prep for! I fell right back into my pre-home game routine with house chores and an overly emotional viewing of a movie. Nothing, and I mean nothing, fuels a star-studded forceful female sporting event than a handful of HARD CRIES WHILE WATCHING Steel Magnolias. OMG, when they are at the graveyard and M'Lnn loses her shit. I CAN'T KEEP IT TOGETHER! And neither can the RED STARS. HIGH STEAKS AND POTATOES BIG FAT BOOTY BUT—that … [Read more...] about Thorns Come Back for 2-2 Draw Against Chicago Red Stars!
