LIMA – Peruvian GDP will continue to post one of the highest growth rates in the region at 3.5% in 2017, Central Reserve Bank (BCR) Governor Julio Velarde has projected. “We are still among Latin America’s top growing countries and, according to our forecast, we will likely be the most [economically] dynamic next year,” he pointed out. BCR expects the Inca nation to record the second highest growth in the region (3.5%) in 2017, only behind Bolivia (3.9%), but outperforming Paraguay (3.5%), Argentina (3.0%) and Colombia (2.4%). Likewise, it is expected to surpass Chile (1.8%), Uruguay (1.5%), Mexico (1.4%), Ecuador (0.6%), Brazil (0.5%) and Venezuela (-3.8%). Natural disaster impact During the presentation of BCR’s March 2017 Inflation Report, Velarde explained the slight downward revision of Peruvian GDP to 3.5% owes to the impact of Coastal El Niño weather phenomenon. While former president Alejandro Toledo walks around as a free man in the United States, Peruvian prosecutors say they would like to get him back to the country to face trial over a 2017 corruption charge. The charge stems from accusations that the man who was Peru’s president from 2001 to 2006 took bribes from the maligned Brazilian engineering conglomerate Odebrecht, which has already been tied to several notable Peruvian politicians, including former presidents Ollanta Humala and Pedro Pablo Kuczynski. Peru’s Foreign Ministry confirmed with a Friday Tweet that it requested Toledo’s extradition from the U.S. State Department that morning. Prosecutors have said that Toledo is believed to have taken up to $20 million in bribes from the Brazilian firm. According to the Associated Press, authorities from the country say that Toledo has been seen in New York and San Francisco. He is thought to be living full-time in California. This February, a Peruvian judge said he … [Read more...] about Peru again requests extradition of former president Alejandro Toledo from U.S.
0 Have your say The desperate hope of Alex McLeish will be that when his Scotland team play Peru on Tuesday he avoids the technicolour trauma that befell him when the national side met the South Americans at the 1978 World Cup. The 3-1 pasting suffered by the Scots in their opening game of those ill-starred finals in Argentina was a jolt to the nation’s footballing psyche which had developed delusions of grandeur about the possibilities awaiting them in the jamboree. For McLeish, watching on television as a fan, it was even worse than seeing England lift the trophy 12 years earlier, a dose of monochrome misery delivered to his living room.“I’ve been watching the World Cups since 1966,” said the Scotland manager. “I think that was my first one in black and white. It was probably worse watching us getting gubbed by Peru. We had gone with high expectations and then you realise that they [Peru] are not too bad a team actually. We find that out the … [Read more...] about Alex McLeish sees Peru and Mexico as a challenge for Scotland

He also said that France, one of Peru’s Group C rivals in Russia, is “the strongest national team individually,” while adding that another opponent, Denmark, is also not to be taken lightly.
