Citing “sources familiar with the matter,” Wearable reports Alphabet-owned smart home manufacturer Nest is pursuing an acquisition of Nokia’s Withings health tech division. According to the publication, Nest is one of four companies involved in purchase negotiations for the formerly independent French consumer electronics brand. Two other French firms, as well as one other non-European company, have also expressed interest in the Nokia subsidiary. Nest, however, isn’t guaranteed to win the bid. Given the recent Facebook scandal involving Cambridge Analytica, the French government is reportedly concerned about the optics of approving the sale of a French company to a data-driven business like Alphabet. For its part, Nokia is eager to clean house. According to a leaked memo obtained by The Verge earlier this year, the company conducted a strategic review of its digital health assets and concluded that it “didn’t see a path … [Read more...] about Nest is reportedly pursuing an acquisition of Nokia’s Withings health division

Nokia will sell its health-tech division back to co-founder Éric Carreel, the company announced on Wednesday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but it’s likely that Nokia sold the division at a loss. The company acquired Withings, which it later rebranded to Nokia Health, in 2016 for $191 million USD. Problems quickly ensued, however. In 2017, Nokia announced a write-down of €141 million related to the assets it had acquired through Withings. Just months later, in an internal memo obtained by The Verge, a Nokia executive wrote the company “didn’t see a path forward” in terms of the division becoming “a meaningful part” of Nokia’s business. At one point, both Google and Samsung were involved in bidding to buy Withings from Nokia, but the French government was said to favour a local sale. Moving forward, Nokia says it plans to focus on becoming a business-to-business and licensing company. … [Read more...] about Nokia is selling Withings back to co-founder Éric Carreel

Tech Ashwin Rajagopalan 3 min read Back in the 2000s, when smartphones were not a thing, one brand dominated the mobile phone space, especially in India. Nokia’s Sirocco 8800 broke the clutter with its premium build – clad in stainless steel, and its stiff price tag. A lot has happened since then. Nokia the brand virtually disappeared. First, by the shift of the market to the smartphone that the brand’s Symbian OS wasn’t prepared to handle, and then its sale to Microsoft that saw the famous Finnish marquee name evaporate. But the Nokia brand we once loved is back, resurrected by HMD Global, that owns its exclusive marketing rights in the smartphone space. Launches have been coming thick and fast. The 3310 came in 2017, replete with the Snake game that still takes Nokia die-hards down memory lane. In the first quarter of 2018, the company unveiled a trio of devices, at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, based on the Android One platform. The … [Read more...] about Can The New Sirocco Help Nokia Up Its Image?
