ALBANY — New York state officials are probing the tax practices of President Donald Trump and his family following a New York Times report on their use of tax avoidance schemes that they called deceptive and potentially fraudulent. The Department of Taxation and Finance, which is responsible for investigating tax fraud, has opened an investigation; it can collect fines and penalties and also refer criminal actions to the attorney general's office. Trump (ABC NEWS) — The New York State Tax Department is reviewing allegations that Donald Trump received millions of dollars from his father, Fred Trump, possibly including through tax fraud schemes. The tax department is “vigorously pursuing all appropriate avenues of investigation,” officials told ABC News. The statute of limitations “makes any criminal prosecution all but impossible,” a law enforcement source told ABC News. Trump, who has long claimed to be a self-made billionaire, along with his siblings, allegedly helped hide millions in gifts from their parents using fake corporations to hide the money, according to a report in The New York Times. Last Updated Oct 2, 2018 7:56 PM EDT New York's Department of Taxation and Finance is looking into a report published in the New York Times alleging President Donald Trump "participated in dubious tax schemes during the 1990s, including instances of outright fraud, that greatly increased the fortune he received from his parents."The Times' detailed report claims that the current president received far more wealth from his father than he has let on — $413 million in today's dollars, by the Times' accounting. And the report says much of that wealth was possible because the Mr. Trump and his siblings allegedly set up a sham corporation to disguise gifts from their father. According to the Times, Mr. Trump allegedly helped his father, Fred Trump, take improper tax deductions, and helped create a plan to undervalue his parents' real estate properties on tax returns. New York State Tax officials are investigating allegations detailed in an exhaustive New York Times investigation into Donald Trump and his family's business dealings. The Times reported on Tuesday that Trump and his family committed "instances of outright fraud" in order to transfer millions of dollars from the real estate empire of the president's father, Fred Trump, to his children without paying the appropriate taxes.
