Jeremy Corbyn will today reiterate his pledge to introduce a new national holiday to mark the patron saints of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. He will tell a union conference on Monday – St George’s Day – that after eight years of “damaging Tory austerity”, Britain’s workers deserve a day off. Security services and police are to be given tougher powers to act against terrorism suspects in communities where the threat of people being radicalised is thought to be highest. Under a new strategy, authorities will aim to identify plotters before they have finalised any plans for terror attacks. Security chiefs believe a “step change” is needed to keep the public safe from terrorism, according to The Sunday Times. Millions of voters feel politically homeless and would consider backing a new centre-ground party, a poll has revealed. Almost half of those questioned in an exclusive survey for The Independent said both that they did not feel represented by any established party and that a new organisation would have a chance of winning their vote. The BMG Research poll comes as Labour has moved to the left and the Conservative pursuit of Brexit has alienated some centre-ground voters, with new movements arising in a bid to fill the gap.
