Over the next two decades, Minneapolis’ 160 neighborhood parks are in line for renovation.A plan from the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board calls for spending $11 million per year from 2017 to 2036 on neighborhood park restoration based on equity measures and on input from neighbors in each of the city’s five park districts. “Neighborhood parks have been underfunded for decades,” senior planner Carrie Ann Christensen said. “There was a recreation center boom in the 1970s but since then we, along the city, recognize there has been a lack of investment in neighborhood parks.” Thousands of Minneapolitans have offered opinions and inputs on the district plans. “This is a fabulous plan,” said Cordelia Pierson, chair of the Community Advisory Committee for the southeast/northeast area. “It sets the stage for achieving the goals of racial equity.” The Minneapolis park district is no small operation. The system has 6,809 acres of … [Read more...] about Minneapolis’ neighborhood parks get a refresh

Cepro site may become neighborhood park
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) may aquire the Cepro site along the Midtown Greenway to add a path from 10th Ave. S., a stage with seating and onsite utilities. PHOTO COURTESY OF THE MINNEAPOLIS PARKS AND RECREATION BOARD The site currently belongs to Hennepin County. The MPRB, Hennepin County and community members collaborated on a concept plan for the property in 2016-17. Oops. City crews mow flowers in Lyell-Otis neighborhood park
Meaghan M. McDermott @meagmc Published 11:00 p.m. UTC May 26, 2018 Where have all the flowers gone? Felled by lawnmowers, every one. That was the disappointing scene confronting Lyell-Otis Neighborhood Association volunteer Pam Davis on Wednesday when she went to check on the budding tulips she'd planted along the fenceline at J. P. Riley Park on Santee Street. "The thing is, it's not even just this one time," said Davis, who posted a video on her organization's Facebook page expressing her disappointment at the carnage of greenery. "This is extremely frustrating." Davis said she doesn't believe the mowing was malicious, but apparently city of Rochester crews hired to cut the grass couldn't discern the difference between weeds and tulips. In the aftermath, "nothing was there, no greenery, no leaves," said Davis. "I was like, 'this is insane.'" Admittedly, there wasn't an abundance of flowers to begin with, Davis said. She and her mom and daughter planted a few … [Read more...] about Oops. City crews mow flowers in Lyell-Otis neighborhood park
