WASHINGTON (Sputnik) – SpaceX's Dragon cargo ship left the International Space Station (ISS) on Sunday and is returning to Earth; the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is broadcasting the journey live. © CC0SpaceX Sets August 14 Launch Date for Next US Resupply Mission to ISSThe ship undocked from the ISS at 8:47 GMT and is expected to make splashdown in the Pacific at about 14:15 GMT. Dragon is currently the only resupply spacecraft that is capable of returning to Earth intact. The cargo ship arrived at the ISS in mid-August, bearing various supplies, including equipment for scientific experiments. Dragon is carrying about 3,800 pounds of cargo to Earth, including various science samples. Loose pin responsible for Boeing Starliner’s failure to deploy parachute in test
Boeing has identified the part which lead to a parachute failing to deploy during the testing of its Starliner capsule earlier this week. The company has announced that a misplaced pin was the cause of the issue. On Tuesday, Boeing performed a launch abort test of its capsule, which is intended to eventually ferry astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). For a manned craft, the launch abort test is vitally important. It is where the engineers test what would happen if something goes wrong during the launch and the passengers are forced to evacuate. Although the test was mainly a success, with the capsule being pushed away from the rocket as it should be and landing a mile away from the launch site, there was a snag. Only two of the three parachutes which slow the descent of the capsule opened, with the third failing to deploy. Following an investigation, Boeing announced it had discovered the cause of the parachute failing to open. As reported by Space Flight Now, John … [Read more...] about Loose pin responsible for Boeing Starliner’s failure to deploy parachute in test
Europe launches ‘Green Deal’ as Thunberg denounces climate inaction
BRUSSELS/MADRID (Reuters) - Europe sought to bolster the world’s faltering battle against climate change on Wednesday with its “Green Deal” to slash fossil fuel dependence, while teen activist Greta Thunberg rebuked global leaders for dragging their feet. With fires, floods and droughts ruining millions of lives around the world, the European Union’s new executive cast the plan as the bloc’s “man on the moon moment,” kindling hopes among campaigners that other big emitters may follow suit. Nevertheless, the chasm between the pace of action by Europe and other major economies and the kind of transformational change that scientists say is needed to preserve a hospitable climate stoked fury at U.N. negotiations in Madrid. “I’m sure that if people heard what was going on and what was said ... during these meetings, they would be outraged,” Thunberg told the gathering. She was named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year for … [Read more...] about Europe launches ‘Green Deal’ as Thunberg denounces climate inaction
Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space company tests rocket engine
Just days after he unveiled plans for a futuristic drone delivery system on CBS News' 60 Minutes, Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos is announcing another aerial milestone. His private space flight company, Blue Origin, successfully test-fired a new rocket engine that could someday be used to launch spacecraft into orbit. The BE-3 engine uses liquid hydrogen fuel -- the first newly developed rocket engine to do so in more than a decade. It was designed at Blue Origin's research and development center outside Seattle, and the company says it's been run through more than 160 starts at its test site near Van Horn, Texas. The latest test took place on Nov. 20, but details were not revealed until Tuesday. The company and NASA officials say the test ran the engine through the steps of a complete mission cycle. It mimicked space flight with 110,000 pounds of thrust during a 145-second boost phase, then shut down for approximately four and a half minutes to simulate coasting, … [Read more...] about Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin space company tests rocket engine
SpaceX Launches Mission For NASA With 3 Tons Of Supplies
MANHATTAN BEACH, CA — SpaceX launched its 19th cargo mission for NASA Thursday, cramming tons of scientific research and cargo bound for astronauts on board the International Space Station into a capsule carried by a powerful rocket. The launch from Cape Canaveral in Florida was scheduled to take place Wednesday morning but was canceled because of strong winds. The company is launching its "Cargo Dragon" capsule on top of a Falcon 9 rocket for the mission, called CRS-19. The capsule has nearly 3 tons of supplies on board, as well as several research and technology payloads destined for the space station. The capsule flying for CRS-19 was reused twice before — in 2014 and 2017. This is the second time SpaceX has flown one of its Cargo Dragon capsules on three separate missions. According to NASA, the spacecraft will deliver "critical materials to directly support" dozens of the more than 250 upcoming "science investigations and technology demonstrations." The cargo includes … [Read more...] about SpaceX Launches Mission For NASA With 3 Tons Of Supplies
India’s Moon Mission on 2018 Target, Says ISRO Chief
© Sputnik / Anton DenisovIndia, Israel Among Five Teams Fighting For First Private Moon LandingNew Delhi (Sputnik) — The Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) is on course to develop an engine for the moon mission Chandrayaan-2, said ISRO chairman AS Kiran Kumar. "ISRO will develop an engine that will help in the controlled landing on the moon. The mission is currently planned for the first quarter of 2018. Scientists have developed an artificial crater to simulate the surface of lunar conditions for landing experiments," he told reporters on the sidelines of the convocation ceremony of Vels University near Chennai, the capital of southern state Tamil Nadu. Kumar said tests were under way for a controlled landing of the spacecraft on the surface of the moon. A series of ground tests have also been conducted by ISRO scientists at its facility … [Read more...] about India’s Moon Mission on 2018 Target, Says ISRO Chief
