Photo: Comedy Central Key & Peele ended its five-season run a little less than a year ago, and in the crazy political year since, their perspective has been noticeably lacking. But beyond commentary, the show was a relief — a space to be dazzled by pure comedy craftsmanship. When it was on the air, it’s hard to argue there were better written, better performed, or better produced sketches anywhere else on television than Key & Peele. The scripts were tight, the production was pitch perfect, and performers Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele could pull off anything, heightening a small premise or grounding an extravagant one equally effortlessly. With the show up for seven Emmy awards this year, including Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, Vulture asked Key, who is nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series, to walk us through his favorite sketches of the show’s final season. He shares behind-the-scenes stories, the ideas behind certain … [Read more...] about Keegan-Michael Key’s 11 Favorite Sketches From
Sure, but what does it mean? Photo: Li Xueren/Xinhua News Agency/Getty Images I think my colleague Ed Kilgore is right to describe President Trump’s announcement about trade with China as more of a climbdown than a breakthrough. Trump had threatened to raise tariffs on Chinese imports if they didn’t make concessions before the end of the year; now, by setting a 90-day negotiating window, he’s delaying that threat to the end of February. But Trump’s record of trade climbdowns has been uneven to date. In spring of 2018, he appeared to climb down from his threat to impose major steel and aluminum tariffs, by temporarily exempting so many U.S. trading partners as to render the tariffs unimportant. But this reprieve actually proved temporary, and now the metal tariffs are real, broad, and important. Other threatened measures, such as global tariffs on auto imports, have remained mere threats — so far. All of which is to say, the trade war with … [Read more...] about Will Congress Take Away Trump’s Keys on Trade?

Photo: Getty Images/Composited by New York Keeping up with content trends can feel impossible. Consumer fatigue is a very real thing, and changing algorithms, emerging platforms, and shifting priorities in metrics can leave the savviest creators drowning in guessing games. Paul Jarvis — the designer-turned-writer who publishes the popular Sunday Dispatches newsletter — has learned not to obsess over what’s next, taking a slow, steady, and authentic approach to gaining loyal readers. It helps that when Jarvis launched Sunday Dispatches in November 2012, the goal was simple: Communicate his schedule to design clients. Articles were an afterthought, an attempt to make the newsletter less utilitarian and more interesting. Today, none of his 35,000 subscribers open Sunday Dispatches for his schedule. He ditched design completely a few years ago, having scaled the newsletter to a full-on career writing about working and living online. Over the years, he’s watched … [Read more...] about The Low-Key Content Strategy That Earned This Writer His Following
As Matteo Salvini plots a return to power after a botched bid to become prime minister in the summer, he faces a vocal new adversary – a brand new grass-roots political movement nicknamed the Sardines. They have staged large demonstrations in recent days in the northern region of Emilia-Romagna, which Mr Salvini hopes to wrest from the centre-Left at elections in January. The region has been a bastion of the centre-Left for decades and for The League to win it would be a huge coup, boosting his chances of success at the national level. The nascent group, launched on social media by four activists, claims it has attracted so many followers that when they gather in piazzas they are crammed in like sardines. On Monday night, around 6,000 supporters braved pouring rain to stage a demonstration in a large piazza in the historic city of Modena, a counter-point to a visit to the city by Mr Salvini. “We’re tired of the politics of hate,” Samar Zaoui, a … [Read more...] about Matteo Salvini’s bid for return to power in key Italian vote contested by new ‘Sardines’ protest group
