Jaafar Nimeiri
As president of Sudan, Africa's largest nation in area, Jaafar Nimeiri, who has died aged 79, mutated from an enthusiastic, pan-Arabist and socialist into a pragmatic supporter of free enterprise, private ownership and foreign investment. Having seized power in the May revolution of 1969, he fended off successive insurrections but, having suppressed two powerful Sufi orders, the Ansar and Khatmiyya, Nimeiri then recast himself as an imam. In September 1983 he applied sharia law throughout his country, resuscitating outmoded punishments such as amputating the hands of thieves and fornicators, and the ceremonial emptying of liquor worth $5m into the Nile. Such trappings of piety failed to impress the Ansar, or shore up his ebbing fortunes. He was deposed by popular revolt in 1985. Nimeiri's early career closely resembled that of Libya's Muammar Gaddafi. In 1969 both young colonels rose from humble backgrounds to become national leaders overnight. They emulated the secularist Free … [Read more...] about Jaafar Nimeiri
AP Explains: Trump disclosure a breach of trust, if not law
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump didn’t appear to break any law by sharing highly classified information with Russia, but that doesn’t make it any less problematic for America’s intelligence agencies and their overseas partners. Even as Trump’s national security adviser insisted the Oval Office disclosure to visiting Russian diplomats was “wholly appropriate” and routine, few people outside of the White House saw it that way. The threat related to laptops carried on airplanes, according to a senior U.S. official. The information appears to be related to the basis for a U.S. and British decision in March … [Read more...] about AP Explains: Trump disclosure a breach of trust, if not law

US sanctions not his toughest crisis, says founder Ren Zhengfei
SHENZHEN: For decades, Huawei founder Ren Zhengfei stayed out of sight as his company grew to become the biggest maker of network gear for phone carriers and surpassed Apple as the No. 2 smartphone brand. Now, Ren is shedding that anonymity as Huawei Technologies Ltd. mobilizes against the latest threat to its success: U.S. sanctions and warnings that it is a security risk. The billionaire entrepreneur embroiled in the Trump administration's fight with China over technology is a 75-year-old former army engineer who worked his way out of childhood poverty. He has survived competition that drove Western rivals out of the market, brushes with financial disaster and job stress so severe he contemplated suicide. He sees American pressure as just the latest in a string of tests that have hardened him and his company. "For three decades, Huawei has been suffering and no joy," Ren said in an interview.
