Kyle Neddenriep Indianapolis Star Published 6:07 PM EST Nov 4, 2018 As I stood off to the side and watched Avon football coach Mark Bless and his assistants address the Orioles after a 38-0 pasting of Brownsburg late Friday night, I wondered how many other coaching staffs in the state were doing the same at that exact moment. It is a cool thing, winning a sectional title. Sometimes we – as writers, fans, people who follow high school sports – forget these moments. We remember 2017 in football as the year Ben Davis dominated or 2015 as the year Center Grove went undefeated. Some of the moments along the way, like these sectional championships on Friday night, become cloudy over time. This year could be the same. Warren Central has been a steamroller all season in Class 6A. If the top-ranked Warriors get knocked off this year – North Central is next to take its chance, at home on Friday in the regional – it will be considered a big upset. But there is room … [Read more...] about IHSAA football: Sectional football titles are notable achievements

Kenzie Winstead The Courier Journal Published 9:28 PM EDT Sep 30, 2018 The three-time state champion Providence volleyball team will wait until the semifinals to start its defense of the Class 4A, Sectional 15 crown at Seymour. The extra time is a blessing for Providence coach Terri Purichia, who underwent back surgery on Sept. 20 to repair a herniated disc that caused her to miss seven matches. “It was causing me a lot of pain,” she said of the back ailment. “I feel really good now. I feel so much better and I’m getting a little stronger every day.” The IHSAA drew for all four classes of the volleyball state tournaments Sunday night . Play begins the week of Oct. 8. The Pioneers (28-2) will take a No. 2 ranking into the sectional tournament. Their two losses came against Mercy and Indianapolis Brebeuf. Over the past seven years, Providence is an eye-popping 240-24. Kyle Neddenriep Indianapolis Star Published 4:09 p.m. UTC Jun 30, 2018 The other day, I posed a question on Twitter: “If you were IHSAA commissioner for a day and could make one change, what would it be?” Perhaps I should have known that a hypothetical question would bring some, um, unrealistic answers. But for every “dissolve the federal government” and “sell beer at games” response, there were at least 10 thoughtful replies. The volume of responses is another small reminder of the passion for high school sports in this state. After weeding through my mentions for several hours this week, I compiled a list of some of the most common, most realistic and most creative responses (and some on the other side). Here they are: From the “no surprise here” category: There was a significant amount of responses asking for a return to the one-class basketball tournament. Even though the four-class tournament was established in 1998 and a … [Read more...] about What would you change if you were IHSAA commissioner for a day?
