Away from the Democratic national convention, an art exhibition called Truth to Power has been one of the must-see events in Philadelphia this week. The pop-up show, located about five miles north of the Wells Fargo arena, features pieces highlighting gun violence and police shootings in the US. New Jersey senator Cory Booker and actor Rosario Dawson have been among those to visit the space, which includes work by Banksy and Shepard Fairey – the creator of the Barack Obama “hope” poster in 2008. “It’s to talk about issues that young people care about,” said Michael Skolnik, one of the producers of Truth to Power. “Mass incarceration, immigration, gender issues, climate justice and jobs and student debt.” Skolnik, an artist based in Brooklyn, New York, has been a visitor to the Democratic national convention this week. He said there were parallels between what was happening in the convention center and the exhibit. “There’s … [Read more...] about Art exhibit speaks Truth to Power in the shadow of the Democratic convention

SPD Leader Resignation Puts Extra Strain on Wobbling German Coalition Government
Nahles' resignation came as no surprise since she crystallised criticism after her party's defeat in the elections to the European Parliament on 26 May. Largely outnumbered by The Greens, who had won more than 20 percent of the vote, the center-left traditional SPD only won 15.5 percent — the party's worst result ever. "The discussions within the parliamentary group and the many reactions of the party showed me that I no longer have the support necessary for the exercise of my functions," the now-former SPD leader admitted in a statement. Activists Discuss the Future of Abortion Rights
Earlier this month, NEWSWEEK published ++an article on what's been called the "graying" of the abortion-rights movement++:[[https://www.newsweek.com/id/236506]] the idea that older women are promoting the cause while younger women are uninvolved. It's a concern that's been raised before and that left younger pro-choice activists asking, "What about us?" What resulted was a spirited and informative debate online, where abortion rights activists of all ages discussed what role younger women play in the movement and what the future of that movement looks like. We invited leaders from established pro-choice groups, newer organizations, and prominent online voices to continue that conversation together. Over the course of two days, they discussed the issues raised by the article over e-mail. An edited transcript follows: Nancy Keenan, president, ++NARAL Pro-Choice America[[http://www.naral.org/]]++: There are quite a few questions for all of us to mull over, but I'd like to start off with … [Read more...] about Activists Discuss the Future of Abortion Rights
New York mayor urges UK Labour party to be bold in tackling inequality
Bill de Blasio, the mayor of New York City and one of the Democratic party’s leading progressives, has urged the British Labour party to have the confidence to believe that voters will respond to a party promising to tackle deeply embedded inequality and frozen living standards. De Blasio was speaking to the Guardian before addressing the Labour party’s annual conference. There he derided the “voodoo economics” of the Conservative party’s chancellor, George Osborne, and promised: “Ed Miliband [the Labour leader] will be a prime minister for Britons with second jobs, not just those with second homes.” The rank outsider won the Democratic nomination and then mayoralty last November by a landslide, succeeding Michael Bloomberg with a commitment to tackle economic inequalities in New York. He now runs a $75bn (£46bn) budget with 350,000 employees. The voters of New York City may not be the same as those of York, but De Blasio said he thought … [Read more...] about New York mayor urges UK Labour party to be bold in tackling inequality
The Mystery of Rudy Giuliani’s Moral Decline Isn’t Such a Mystery at All
Rudy Giuliani at the 2016 Republican National Convention. Photo: Brooks Kraft/Corbis via Getty Images Things that now seem inevitable often came first as surprises, and if you look back at the campaign, Rudy Giuliani’s unhinged, grasping embrace of Donald Trump was in fact slow and cautious — at least at first. This evolution (or devolution) over the course of this latest election almost functions as something of a stand-in for Rudy’s career: a long arc of slowly moving rightward over the decades, from district attorney to America’s mayor to Fox News talking head. Then, suddenly, with a snarling acceleration, emerging on the national stage someone who looks almost unrecognizable as the same politician who, on 9/11, ached alongside a diverse city and a frightened country in shock. Now, instead, he was haranguing his enemies with vicious personal attacks, race baiting, denying reality alongside the same conspiracy theorists who doubted the 9/11 attacks. He was … [Read more...] about The Mystery of Rudy Giuliani’s Moral Decline Isn’t Such a Mystery at All
