U.S. 2018 Hurricane Season Rush Limbaugh has claimed that forecaster’s predictions that Hurricane Florence could have a devastating and potentially life-threatening effect when it batters the East coast has been exaggerated in order to “politicize” climate change. The right-wing radio host said during his show that hurricane forecasting has been amplified in order to convince people that climate change is causing greater natural disasters, noting how previous hurricanes are downgraded before they make landfall. Millions of people have been told to brace themselves as Hurricane Florence approaches with winds of up to 140 miles per hour expected to batter North and South Carolina and Virginia, bringing the risk of storm surges and flash flooding. “We have exhaustive experience with hurricanes here at the Southern Command, and we have great empathy for anybody who is in the pathway of one of these things,” Limbaugh said. NECKER Island has been Sir Richard Branson's private paradise retreat and a playground for his A-list guests for decades. But the island was devastated by Hurricane Irma. Here's what we know... What is Necker Island and where is it? Necker is a 74-acre island with white sandy beaches and lush hills with stunning views of neighbouring islands. It is part of the British Virgin Islands chain in the Caribbean Sea, about 100 miles east of Puerto Rico. It was uninhabited until Richard Branson turned it into a luxury resort. In 1965 Daily Telegraph journalist Andrew Walker and photographer Don McCullin were cast away on the island to see if they could survive for three weeks but quit after 15 days. McCullin said there was nothing idyllic about the desert island, adding: "The mosquitoes and other insects were more venomous and persistent than any I had encountered in Vietnam or the Congo." Now it is one of the world's most exclusive resorts, with around 100 staff catering for up to 34 guests. … [Read more...] about Where is Necker Island, how much did Richard Branson’s home cost and did it get destroyed in Hurricane Irma?
Laura Layden Naples Published 6:33 p.m. UTC Jun 13, 2018 Florida's citrus growers have essentially wrapped up one of the worst seasons they've seen since the 1940s. The latest citrus forecast from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows orange production is down nearly 35 percent from the previous season. Grapefruit fared even worse, with production coming in at half of what it was in the prior season. Much of the blame is put on Hurricane Irma. The massive storm walloped citrus crops across Florida when it made landfall in September. Groves in Southwest Florida were especially hard hit. In the 2017-18 season, Florida growers produced 44.95 million 90-pound boxes of oranges and 3.88 million similarly sized boxes of grapefruit, along with 750,000 boxes of tangerines, tangelos and other specialty fruit. The combined 49.58 million boxes is the smallest number recorded since the 1941-42 season, when growers filled 48.65 … [Read more...] about ‘Horrible’ season — hurt by Hurricane Irma — ends for Florida’s citrus growers
Business owners in Palm Beach County had a message for Hurricane Irma. (Greg Lovett/Palm Beach Post) People bristle in disbelief, even anger, when hurricane center specialist John Cangialosi tells them the truth about Hurricane Irma’s wind speeds. Many believe they survived much worse during the September tempest, and aren’t keen to hear otherwise. But only those within about 15 miles of Irma’s fierce eye that made landfall near Cudjoe Key on Sept. 10, 2017 experienced the sting of a Cat 4 hurricane. As the wind field spread and slowed, people at either end of the island chain — Key Largo and Key West — likely felt no more than sustained Category 1 winds. Hurricane Irma crossing the Florida Keys on Sept. 10, 2017. In Palm Beach County, where trees toppled and electricity faltered, no sustained hurricane-force winds were measured during Irma, although a 91-mph gust is on record at Palm Beach International Airport. Broward County had one sustained … [Read more...] about Hurricane Irma: Think you survived a Cat 4…not even close
