A man and his children in Hanoi have donated VND1.8bn (USD77,800) to clean up a polluted lake in their village and built a small public park. The lake of Hanh Dan Village For the past two years, the locals in Hanh Dan Village, Tan Lap Commune, have often go to a 3,000-square-metre park to play. This park is built around a village lake constructed by 74-year-old Nguyen Tu Hung. Hung said he had wanted to build the park since 2000 but he didn't have the money then. When implementing the New Countryside Programme, he and the local authorities worked together to improve the village's environment. "The lake used to be very clean and clear. The villagers even washed the rice there. But because of rapid urbanisation it was polluted by household wastewater and everyone tried to avoid it," Hung said. Coast Guard says Great Lakes waters still dangerously cold
TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. (AP) — It’s summer, but don’t be fooled — the Great Lakes are still dangerously cold. The U.S. Coast Guard says water temperatures below 77 degrees can quickly cause hypothermia for someone who falls from a boat. All five of the lakes are well below that mark. A sudden plunge into cold water can trigger a gasp reflex leading to inhalation of water and drowning. In addition to wearing life jackets, the Coast Guard says mariners should dress according to the temperature of the water, not the air. They also should file a float plan or at least inform others about where they’re going and when they expect to return. … [Read more...] about Coast Guard says Great Lakes waters still dangerously cold

The National Weather Service issued wind chill advisories covering a vast area from South Texas to Canada and from Montana and Wyoming through New England. Dangerously low temperatures enveloped much of the Midwest, yet didn’t deter hundreds of people from ringing in the new year by jumping into Lake Michigan. Despite sub-freezing temperatures and a warning of potential hypothermia from the local fire chief, throngs of people took part in the annual tradition in Milwaukee, warming up later with chili or heat from a beach fire pit. A similar event was canceled from the Chicago lakefront, where the temperature dipped below zero as thick white steam rose from the lake Monday morning. Organizers said the arctic blast made jumping into the … [Read more...] about 2018 starts with record cold in parts of the Midwest
