More posts by this contributor The war over artificial intelligence will be won with visual data The visual data sets of images and videos amassed by the most powerful tech companies have been a competitive advantage, a moat that keeps the advances of machine learning out of reach from many. This advantage will be overturned by the advent of synthetic data. The world’s most valuable technology companies, such as Google, Facebook, Amazon and Baidu, among others, are applying computer vision and artificial intelligence to train their computers. They harvest immense visual data sets of images, videos and other visual data from their consumers. These data sets have been a competitive advantage for major tech companies, keeping out of reach from many the advances of machine learning and the processes that allow computers and algorithms to learn faster. Now, this advantage is being disrupted by the ability … [Read more...] about Deep learning with synthetic data will democratize the tech industry
Facebook with free data
INTERNATIONAL - Facebook Inc. has been conducting market research in recent weeks to determine whether an ad-free version paid by subscriptions would spur more people to join the social network, according to people familiar with the matter. The company has studied such an option in the past, but now there’s more internal momentum to pursue it in light of Facebook’s recent privacy data scandal, the people said. The plans aren’t solid and may not go forward, according to the people, who asked not to be identified because the discussions are private. Facebook declined to comment on the possibility of a subscription-based ad-free service. Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg and Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg spent much of Facebook’s first-quarter earnings call touting the benefits of the ad-supported network, which, they said, allows the company to reach the most people, at every income level. But it’s not the only way to run the business. … [Read more...] about There may be a Facebook ad-free subscription version
An IT expert, Mr Charles Douglas, says the safest and most efficient way of stopping Facebook and other social network sites from tracking ones browsing history is by installing DNT+ in the web browser. DNT+ or “Do Not Track Plus’’, is a free-of-charge browser extension for blocking trackers on the internet. Douglas, who works with Phoenix Hubs, gave the advice in an interview on Monday in Abuja. He gave a few tips on how to avoid losing Facebook information (contacts, messages and locations) to third party users in view of the recent Facebook data leakage of over 87 million users worldwide. The Founder of Facebook, Mr Mark Zuckberberg, who was interrogated by the U.S. Senate, admitted that the organisation needed to have a more secure platform to forestall further exposure of data to the public. Douglas said “DNT+, when installed as an extension of ones browser, can expand each section and see exactly which of these social sites have been blocked. “For … [Read more...] about Expert to Facebook users: Avoid data leakage on platform

What Mr. Zuckerberg got instead, as he testified before the House Energy and Commerce Committee on Wednesday, was a grilling about Facebook’s own data-mining practices. Representative Debbie Dingell, a Democrat from Michigan, for one, wanted to know about Facebook’s use of different types of tracking software to follow consumers’ activities on millions of non-Facebook sites all over the web. “It doesn’t matter whether you have a Facebook account,” Ms. Dingell said to Mr. Zuckerberg. … [Read more...] about What You Don’t Know About How Facebook Uses Your Data
