At first, doctors minimized the risk and said mask-wearing wasn't necessary. US scientists stumbled in developing reliable tests to diagnose the disease. Now there's hope in the form of vaccines, although their rollout has been much slower than predicted. "The Biden team surely is aware of what lies ahead," Sepkowitz observed.
