Jerry Hildenbrand 3 Aug 2019 18 We all love the Shield TV around here. It's almost universally thought of as the best way to get Android on your TV, isn't outrageously expensive, and has enough power to stream your 4K HDR content without sputtering or complaining. It's also a decent gaming console and makes for a heck of a streaming server when you use Plex or Kodi. It's one of those rare gadgets we buy that does what is advertised and more; you'll get your money's worth from a Shield TV. Another thing that isn't talked about as often is the level of support NVIDIA gives the Shield family and the Shield TV in particular. Released in 2015, it's one of the few devices that have been updated to Android Pie and the only four-year-old device that didn't come directly from Google to have it. And it doesn't … [Read more...] about The NVIDIA Shield TV is still one of the best Android devices you can buy

Until recently, weaknesses in Android camera apps from Google and Samsung made it possible for rogue apps to record video and audio and take images and then upload them to an attacker-controlled server—without any permissions to do so. Camera apps from other manufacturers may still be susceptible. The weakness, which was discovered by researchers from security firm Checkmarx, represented a potential privacy risk to high-value targets, such as those preyed upon by nation-sponsored spies. Google carefully designed its Android operating system to bar apps from accessing cameras and microphones without explicit permission from end users. An investigation published Tuesday showed it was trivial to bypass those restrictions. The investigation found that an app needed no permissions at all to cause the camera to shoot pictures and record video and audio. To upload the images and video—or any other image and video stored on the phone—to an attacker-controlled server, an app … [Read more...] about Google & Samsung fix Android spying flaw. Jerry Hildenbrand 8 Feb 2018 19 NVIDIA's Shield TV is one of those rare things that are still "best in class" years after they were released. It has plenty of competition, but if you want the best multi-purpose set-top TV box you can get, it's hard not to recommend the Shield TV. It has you covered whether you want to listen to music, watch a movie or show, or grab a controller and game the night away. I chalk that up to two things — the hardware inside it and the software support from NVIDIA. Considering that, as strange as it sounds NVIDIA is doing the right thing by holding back its Oreo update. Smart TVs need to be able to show you what's on that you'll like; that's where the smart part comes in. I have a feeling that anyone familiar with the Shield TV who knows how and why this all … [Read more...] about Did NVIDIA do the right thing by holding back Oreo for the Shield TV?
