The theme of this year's Costume Institute's Met Gala was "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination," but some Catholics were not happy about the parade of celebs sporting halos, wings, rosaries, crosses and pope hats. They accused the fashion world of appropriating religious symbols and images many consider sacred. Others pointed out the Church has inspired art and fashion for centuries, from Michelangelo to Madonna and Dolce & Gabbana. Did the gala disrespect Catholicism? PERSPECTIVES Critics argued no fashion event would ever present an Islam-inspired theme. They say Catholicism gets no respect. Fashion as a religious experience might be a feeling only the most devoted New York Fashion Week fans are familiar with, but with its latest exhibit the Metropolitan Museum of Art is looking to change that. “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” — the largest exhibit in the museum’s history — invites visitors on a pilgrimage spanning more than 100 city blocks, from the museum’s Fifth Avenue spot uptown to The Cloisters, and encompassing 25 galleries and 60,000 square feet. This year’s Catholic Congress (Katholikentag) in the western town of Münster has already welcomed high-profile guests such as Chancellor Angela Merkel and President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. The gathering runs from May 9th to May 13th. Since 1950, the congress - which attracts tens of thousands of Christians and non-Christians from Germany and beyond - has taken place every two years in a different German city. Alternating yearly with the Protestant Congress (Kirchentag), in 2016 it was held in Leipzig and two years prior to that in Regensburg.
