More than 10 years ago, a friend from Brixton came to stay in my Amsterdam apartment and brought me a tape of the sessions that would become the bulk of the Alabama 3's incendiary debut album, Exile on Coldharbour Lane. Its fusion of techno with country and western was astonishingly bold, combining the most radical and reactionary genres of popular music. I started to check out the band's gigs and found that Jake Black (aka D Wayne Love), one of the band's founding members, and I had many mutual friends from our raving days in Glasgow, stretching back to the punk era. So I became one of the band's aficionados, known collectively as the "bammies": we're the punters who help make A3 gigs the best party in town. I can't understand why the Alabama 3 aren't one of the biggest bands on the planet. Woke Up This Morning, which plays over the opening credits of The Sopranos, remains their best-known song, but you would expect at least one of their albums to have gone platinum on the leg-up from … [Read more...] about ‘We’re amazed we’re still alive’

Personalized Medicine: New Era of Individualized Treatment Arrives
A new era of personalized medicine has dawned, with medical therapies tailored to individual patients based on their own genes. The practice, in its infancy, is illustrated in a new case of individualized cancer treatment. Two new studies, published in the April 20 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, document situations in which sequencing a patient's entire genome revealed crucial information about that person's cancer, and in one case, led doctors to choose a specific therapy that sent the cancer into remission."These cases of personalized genomic medicine are just some of the first examples of what will likely be commonplace in the near future," Boris Pasche, of the University of Alabama in Birmingham, and Devin Absher, of the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology in Alabama, write in an editorial that accompanies the papers. However, sequencing a person's genome is still too expensive for such screenings to be done routinely, the researchers say — it … [Read more...] about Personalized Medicine: New Era of Individualized Treatment Arrives
‘It’s time we got angrier’
The following correction was printed in the Guardian's Corrections and clarifications column, Friday April 20 2007 In the article below we referred to a 2006 survey. We are happy to acknowledge that this survey, Women in Theatre 2006, was conducted and published by the Sphinx Theatre Company. In 1984, a survey found that only 12% of artistic directors in British theatres were women. Last year, 22 years on, another survey found this figure had risen - but only to 19%. In that same 22-year period, women have risen in the workplace, becoming entrepreneurs, leaders of companies, editors of national newspapers, yet the doors to British theatre buildings seem to have remained largely closed. But it looks like change is in the air. While the National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company are run by men, the appointment of Vicky Featherstone in late 2004 as the first artistic director of the National Theatre of Scotland was seen as significant. An increasing number of women are now easing … [Read more...] about ‘It’s time we got angrier’
No. 2 Clemson clobbers Pitt 42-10 for 4th straight ACC title
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Exactly 10 years after being hired as head coach, Dabo Swinney made history with the Clemson Tigers. Travis Etienne ran for 156 yards and two touchdowns, Trevor Lawrence threw two short scoring passes to Tee Higgins and No. 2 Clemson beat Pitt 42-10 on Saturday night on a rainy night to become the first team to win four straight Atlantic Coast Conference championship games. “You can’t be the best ever if you don’t do things that have never been done,” a triumphant Swinney said after the game. Clemson (13-0, CFP No. 2) is expected to face third-ranked Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff on Dec. 29, though the field won’t be set until Sunday. As Swinney held up the championship trophy on the field after the game, he shouted to thousands of waterlogged fans clad in orange rain jackets: “I think we should just come back and do it again next year!” “It’s incredibly difficult to have the consistency … [Read more...] about No. 2 Clemson clobbers Pitt 42-10 for 4th straight ACC title

Labour’s Jess Phillips won’t rule out running to replace Jeremy Corbyn
Labour's Jess Phillips hasn't ruled out running to replace Jeremy Corbyn - but says it can't be just be a "personality game". “If people trust me then yes I will take a role in rebuilding," she said. “But I’m not going to sit here and make your headlines tonight when the thing that matters to me more than anything is having a healthy vehicle to change the world is in tatters. “This isn’t about headlines - this is about people’s lives.” Speaking before the result of her Birmingham Yardley constituency was announced, Ms Phillips said the night had been “s***”.
