New Orleans has a world-renowned dining scene and more than its share of iconic restaurants. But just a few miles from the French Quarter there is a lesser-known establishment – Turkey and the Wolf – with a simple menu and no shortage of hungry fans. The lunch-only sandwich shop has earned accolades from haute cuisine publications like Food & Wine and Bon Appétit, which named it America's best new restaurant of 2017. CBS News contributor Jamie Wax visited the humble establishment to meet the man behind it all. In the Irish Channel neighborhood of New Orleans, hungry locals and tourists, young and old, flock to the tiny cinderblock building that houses Turkey and the Wolf. JuneBaby, a black-owned restaurant that serves southern-style cuisine in the Pacific Northwest city of Seattle has been named the 2018 Best New Restaurant by the James Beard Foundation. Chef Edouardo Jordan accepted the award during a ceremony Monday at the Lyric Opera House in Chicago. Jordan also was named best chef in the Northwest. The award honors a restaurant that opens in the calendar year before the award is given that already displays “excellence in food, beverage and service, and that is likely to make an impact in the years to come.” JuneBaby, his father’s nickname, opened last year. JuneBaby advertises its menu as food with roots. Breads include buttermilk biscuits. Main dishes include chicken fried steak, fried catfish and spring greens. Desserts include pecan pie ice cream sandwiches and chocolate banana rum cake. Seattle’s JuneBaby opened its doors last night for the first time after winning big at the 2018 James Beard Awards, to a line stretching down the block. On Monday night, chef Edouardo Jordan took home not one, but two James Beard Awards, widely considered the highest honors in the restaurant industry. Early in the evening, he was crowned Best Chef: Northwest; later, his restaurant JuneBaby earned the award for Best New Restaurant in the country, making him the first African-American to win that national category.
