Expanding to another 34 offshore hubs after an early rollout last weekend, The Next Level delivered $85.7M this session, lifting the international box office cume to $152.5M in 52 total markets so far. This puts the sequel to the 2017 hit at $213M global. And that’s as The Next Level exploded to a $60.1M domestic debut, far exceeding expectations. ‘Frozen 2’ Heats Up $1B+ Worldwide Box Office; 6th Disney Title Across The Threshold In 2019
After crossing the unprecedented $10B milestone worldwide last weekend, becoming the first studio ever to do so, Disney has bragging rights to another notch in its belt as Frozen 2 topped $1B global on Saturday. This means that the Mouse has roared to have six movies over $1B in 2019. The international box office portion of Elsa’s reign is $666M with $366.5M domestic for a worldwide cume of $1.033B. Frozen 2 went out in a different release pattern to that of the original, which took 15 weeks to get to $1B, whereas the current movie has done it in just four frames. There are still markets to come on F2 including Brazil in January. The current weekend was worth $55.7M from 48 material markets (95% of the offshore landscape). The global session was $74.9M. A24’s crime thriller earned an estimated gross of $525,498, opening in five theaters in New York and Los Angeles with a per-screen average of $105,100. This is a shining moment as the limited opening of Uncut Gems makes for the biggest per-screen average opening ever for A24. The film is currently riding the wave of buzz from its festival runs as it continues to gain momentum with its 92% score on Rotten Tomatoes and A- Cinemascore. 6th UPDATE, 9 PM: Final numbers are in for The Lego Movie, The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug, Pompeii and this year’s Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave. All have been updated below. Slave grossed another $7M over the weekend in 55 markets to bring its total international cume to $89.93M and its worldwide to $140.5M. Its top grossing market is the UK, followed by France and Spain where it had a terrific jump of 56% at the box office. It also had a nice 20% bump in Australia. It will open in Japan on Friday, the first territory to open since winning the Oscar. The other big winner at the Oscars with 7 statues, Gravity is still playing to bring its international cume up to $436.9M for a worldwide total of $707.3M. Jumanji: The Next Level topped the weekend box office in its debut, bringing in $60.1 million, while Clint Eastwood’s Richard Jewell underperformed, debuting at the No. 4 spot with just $5 million following a barrage of media controversy over the way it portrayed a journalist.Starring Dwayne Johnson and Kevin Hart, Jumanji 2 outperformed the original 2017 movie, which brought in $36.2 million on its opening three-day holiday weekend. The new release has exceeded Sony’s conservative expectation of a $35 million domestic opening.
