Today's Penn State football news features a number of hard looks at head coach James Franklin's program after the Lions were upset, 21-17, by visiting Michigan State. Starting with the outcome itself, Statecollege.com concludes that action spoke louder than words on Saturday. "Mark Dantonio's actions spoke than words," author Mike Poorman writes. "He came to Happy Valley to win. A fake punt proved it. So did a halfback pass. And so did a fake field goal attempt that failed. "But in losing the field goal -- from 40 yards, it would have tied the game at 17-17 with four minutes to play -- and failing to get a TD, the veteran Michigan State head coach certainly maintained the trust of his players. Dantonio was not leaving without a victory." Focusing on one unit specifically, then, Onward State writes that the Lions' offense has lost its swagger. "Trace McSorley gained some haters who claimed that he just threw the ball up and hoped for the best, but his downfield passes have been … [Read more...] about Penn State-Michigan State showed actions speak louder than words; Lions offense has lost its ‘swagger,’ and more

Mitchell Pearce: It’s time your actions speak louder than your words
Mitchell Pearce is back from rehab and has started his promotional tour. He appears to be taking accountability for his actions, but is it all just a publicity stunt? If you look at Pearce’s actions since the incident on Australia Day, they have all been straight out of the PR handbook. The day after the incident he holds a press conference to say he’s taking accountability for his actions and leaving the country to go to rehab and get some help. This is all very convenient. He then leaves very quickly for rehab… in another country. This does three things: – The NRL do not get a chance to speak to him straight away. If the NRL cannot speak to him, they can’t make any final decisions on his punishment. By Pearce going overseas, it has taken away any chance of the NRL making a rash decision based on public opinion. – It also means the media are less likely to have access to him. If the media has no access to Pearce, the story is not in the news every … [Read more...] about Mitchell Pearce: It’s time your actions speak louder than your words
Iceman review: A riveting deep dive into the story behind the Otztal Alps corpse
In 1991, the mummified remains of a man were found in the Otztal Alps. At first, it was thought he was a hitch-hiker. But then tests revealed that the body, nicknamed Otzi, was in fact around 5,300 years old. So well preserved was he that scientists were able to unlock where Otzi had lived, his last meal, and how he'd died. While the events leading up to his final moments remain a matter of speculation, writer/director Felix Randau offers as plausible an answer as any in Iceman, a riveting deep-dive into the distant past, boasting bursts of visceral violence, and a riveting, committed central performance from the German actor Jurgen Vogel. Randau makes sure that actions speak louder than words by having his characters talk in an un-subtitled early version of the Rhaetic language. This is fitting given the Hobbesian world of the film, where birth and death rub shoulders, and everything in between is a struggle for survival. Otzi, renamed Kelab, is the chieftain of a small community … [Read more...] about Iceman review: A riveting deep dive into the story behind the Otztal Alps corpse
Being There At The 2018 FIFA World Cup Final Was About More Than Just Borders
Sports Alshaar 7 min read A disastrous own goal; a controversial penalty decided by the video assistant referee (VAR); six goals, including three clinical strikes by three truly world-class footballers; cross-dressed Pussy Riot members streaking on the pitch against Russian administration; Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović’s magnanimity; Vladmir Putin’s umbrella; and the victory of football over racism. As much as the 2018 FIFA World Cup final between France and Croatia at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium inspired euphoric celebrations in Paris, it was a once-in-a-lifetime spectacle even for the neutral in the stadium.#France or #Croatia? Action Not Words: The Difference Between Talkers and Doers

It’s Sunday morning and I should be editing articles in advance of my upcoming vacation. Instead, I just got done playing another game of Starcraft II. Since the game was released on July 27th, I’ve played many games of Starcraft II. In fact, I’ve played at least 150 games of Starcraft II. (I know this because the game keeps track of your record. I played 50 training matches, and have since won 47 and lost 42 against human opponents, putting me near the top of my division in the “Silver League”. Plus I’ve played some single-player games.) How much time has playing 150 games of Starcraft II sucked from my life? At about 30 minutes per game, it’s safe to say I’ve spent about 80 hours over the past month — or about 20 hours per week — building virtual armies and … [Read more...] about Action Not Words: The Difference Between Talkers and Doers
