In Nigeria, Shell’s onshore roots still run deep

September 23, 2018 by reuters Leave a Comment

BODO, Nigeria (Reuters) - Royal Dutch Shell wants to reweight its footprint in Nigeria to focus on oil and gas fields far offshore, away from the theft, spills, corruption and unrest that have plagued the West African country’s onshore industry for decades. An overview of the Niger delta where signs of oil spills can be seen in the water in Port Harcourt, Nigeria August 1, 2018. Picture taken August 1, 2018. REUTERS/Ron Bousso Graphic: Oil spills at Shell's Nigeria operations - tmsnrt.rs/2KzACfH But for the company that pioneered Nigeria’s oil industry in the 1950s, the Niger Delta remains as important — and problematic — as ever. While Shell has cut onshore oil production and sold some onshore assets, it continues to invest in others. In fact, onshore production has risen in recent years as a share of Shell’s output in Nigeria, an analysis of company data over the past decade shows. Related Articles Pakistan is at a crossroads: 7pc economic growth has become mandatory 1 day ago A game of hearts and minds 1 day ago Pakistan is currently facing a foreign exchange crisis where boosting exports on a sustainable basis should remain the prime focus of the new government. New government has inherited not so strong economy, high budget deficit, high debt profile and frustration among young voters looking for a change. The checklist is long, but there are four critical areas to immediately focus on including fiscal belt-tightening, improving the business climate, first controlling and later improving deteriorating current account deficit and curbing corruption. Pakistan has so far failed to get foreign investment from US, Europe and Middle East while most of its infrastructure needs are being taken care of by China only. One such project which federal government can initiate right now is to start projects that are easily begun, such as construction of … [Read more...] about Priorities of new Govt to reshape economy

Ben Stokes bowls England to victory over India in gripping first Test as Joe Root out-captains Virat Kohli

August 4, 2018 by telegraph Leave a Comment

England vs India player ratings: Our verdict on each player involved in gripping first Test England’s captain Joe Root had been out-fielded by India’s captain Virat Kohli, and he had been out-batted, but England won the first Test by 31 runs because Root out-captained his counterpart. With the match entering the fourth day on the same knife-edge that it had been on throughout, Root stepped up to captain with a maturity which he had never shown before. Birmingham has seen or rather heard some fine conductors, and Root joined that list, far more Rattle than rattled. Indeed he did a convincing impersonation of his mentor Michael Vaughan at the gut-wrenching climax of England’s two-run win at Edgbaston in 2005, both of them supervising from mid-off with a vestige of outward calm as England edged home. Root was not only clever in his use of bowlers and field-placings: in extremis he brought the best out of all his players as the finest leaders do. Many were the … [Read more...] about Ben Stokes bowls England to victory over India in gripping first Test as Joe Root out-captains Virat Kohli

How ‘AIOps’ is optimizing cloud computing up and down the stack

July 27, 2018 by siliconangle Leave a Comment

Artificial intelligence workloads are consuming ever greater shares of information technology infrastructure resources. AI is also taking up residence as an embedded component for managing, monitoring, scaling, securing and controlling IT infrastructure. Increasingly, this emerging IT management paradigm goes by the name “AIOps.” This buzzword refers to two aspects of AI’s relationship to cloud infrastructures and operations. On the one hand, it refers to AI as a growing workload that infrastructure and operations are being optimized to support. On the other, it refers to AI’s use as a tool to make infrastructure and operations more continuously self-healing, self-managing, self-securing, self-repairing and self-optimizing. In this regard, AI’s growing role in IT infrastructure management stems from its ability to automate and accelerate many tasks more scalably, predictably, rapidly and efficiently than manual methods alone. … [Read more...] about How ‘AIOps’ is optimizing cloud computing up and down the stack
