Advertisement How often do you recharge your smartphone? It’s different for everyone; personally speaking, my phone is charged (on average) every other day, but of course this changes when I’m working “on the road” (conducting interviews or just hanging out in cafes working on my tablet or just with pen and paper).A few years ago I worked as an IT technician, something that required me to have my phone switched on 24/7. This also meant almost perpetual charging, whether at home, in the office or in the car. That’s a lot of recharging; a lot of energy. In a society where energy costs are rising, brownouts and blackouts are more common and the urge to stay connected is ever-greater, knowing how to manage your mobile phone’s battery as effectively as possible is increasingly important. This isn’t only to keep costs down – it’s also about staying in communication with emails and social networking services as well as text messaging and … [Read more...] about How to Make Your Phone’s Battery Last Longer and Hold More Juice

HAWAII—T-Mobile showed the longest-distance 5G signal I've ever seen here at Qualcomm's Snapdragon Tech Summit in Maui, with the new OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren phone hanging onto 5G up to 1.25 miles from a cell site. And that range is only going to get better with time. T-Mobile this week launched "low-band" 5G covering about 200 million people, using 600MHz spectrum but with the range of its mid-band AWS network. The company gave me a OnePlus phone to test the system out for a few days, and the new network feels like good 4G. It should, given how little spectrum it's using. But I'm still happy with the experience on the excellent OnePlus phone, and the phone could get a real boost if the Sprint/T-Mobile merger ever goes through. Washing Away 4G Frustration Maybe the best way to think of T-Mobile's first two 5G phones, the OnePlus 7T Pro 5G McLaren ($899.99) and the Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ 5G ($1299.99) is just as premium 4G phones that wash away some of the frustrations you may … [Read more...] about Testing T-Mobile’s Low-Band 5G: Let’s Call it 4.9G
There comes a time in almost every life where you put a computer in your pocket that's more powerful than anything that went to the moon. I'm speaking of course, of owning your first smartphone. And for many that first smartphone will be Apple's iPhone. Years ago, a friend of mine made that astronomical jump from feature phone to iPhone, and in talking to him I realized there were things I take for granted that he found completely alien. He didn't know the difference between Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and had no clue about the difference between Messages and Mail. Why is the web browser named Safari? Does he really need iTunes on his computer? Why on Earth would anyone talk to Siri? Those questions have since been answered, but as the iPhone 8, 8 Plus, and iPhone X make their debut, new users will join the iOS family. And there will be even more questions. Even seasoned veterans of the iPhone probably don't know every little basic tidbit. I'm not talking the advanced new features of iOS 11 … [Read more...] about iPhone and iOS: The Complete Newbie’s Guide

Two digital pinballs roll slowly across the screen, one a dull grey blob, the other a dynamic orb with light and shadow dancing off its surface as it rolled. This is one demo Qualcomm used this week to show off how its new 5G chips for 2020 -- the Snapdragon 865 and 765G -- will upgrade gaming on your future phone. Built for high-end devices, the Snapdragon 865 chipset contains the lion's share of the new features, which you should expect to see on phones like a future Samsung Galaxy S11 or LG G9. Meanwhile, the Snapdragon 765G is a midprice 5G chip made just for gaming phones, a distinction from the regular Snapdragon 765 that should help nudge more phones for gamers into the market.Mobile gaming is an enormous business, and growing every day. Fortnite had nearly 250 million players around the world in March 2019, according to Statista. Esports viewers will surpass every pro sports league by 2021, and 80% of gamers in China will pay more for a gaming phone according to … [Read more...] about Fortnite to PubG Mobile: 5 ways mobile gaming is about to match your desktop
