When you are a 240-pound linebacker in the NFL, the last thing you want to worry about is “how do I look in a shirt?” For years, Zac Diles played in the NFL, but once the shoulder pads came off, it was apparent that he had more on his chest than muscle. Diles has a condition called gynecomastia, which is derived from the Greek words gyne meaning “woman” and mastos meaning “breast.” While it is a condition, not a disease or something to be ashamed of, the appearance of what is often referred by the derogatory term “man breasts or boobs” can be unpleasant, embarrassing, humiliating and the object of body shaming. “It affected my life a great deal, to the point that I wouldn’t wear certain clothes,” said Diles, who has retired from football. “It was an uncomfortable feeling to think people were staring at my chest because my nipples would always poke out through my shirt.” Diles said friends would tease him but … [Read more...] about HEALTH MATTERS: Former NFL player suffered with gynecomastia for years
14 year old boy puberty
Nearly 7,000 underage girls — some as young as 12 and 13 — have wed older males in South Carolina over the past 20 years, endangered by decades-old legal loopholes that can expose children to sexual abuse. In some cases, these grooms are much older. Since 1997, dozens of South Carolina men in their 40s, 50s and 60s have married teenage girls who were not yet 18.Many of these unions are made possible by a 1962 state law that sets no minimum age for marriage as long as the bride is pregnant. The rule was designed to reduce the number of babies born out of wedlock. But critics argue that it allows older men to sexually exploit younger brides who are themselves still children.Indeed, many of these marriages meet the criteria for child rape. Under existing state laws, an adult in South Carolina could face prosecution for having sex with a minor — a felony — and also marry his pregnant victim with her parent's blessing. As recently as 2014, a 14-year-old girl … [Read more...] about In SC, pregnant girls as young as 12 can marry. In some ways, the spookiest element in author Henry James’ 1898 horror novella “The Turn of the Screw” is an unexplained letter of expulsion from a boarding school. Sure, there are a couple of unnerving ghosts hanging around the story and a seemingly haunted, possibly possessed, pair of siblings presenting their governess with unique problems. Yet the thing that troubles the latter the most is why the older of the kids, a boy named Miles, was kicked out of his school for reasons unknown. What happened there? What did he do? That problem adds to a more general enigma surrounding Miles, who is sweet but manipulative and eerily remote. One is never really sure who Miles is or is developing into, which means Seattle Opera’s choice to cast several actors as the character in composer Benjamin Britten’s adaptation of “The Turn of the Screw” adds to the riddle Miles poses. The role of Miles in Britten’s 1954 work calls for a boy soprano. … [Read more...] about Meet the 13- and 14-year-old boys starring in Seattle Opera’s ‘Turn of the Screw’

Swapna Venugopal Ramaswamy Rockland/Westchester Journal News Published 5:49 p.m. UTC Aug 9, 2018 My grandmother was paraded around her village in India on an elephant when she got her first period -- not a very subtle approach to letting friends and neighbors know that she would soon be marriage material. That was in 1915. When I got mine at 14 in the late 1980s, it was a much more subdued affair -- at least by my grandmother’s standards. Sweet treats were distributed throughout my apartment building in Bombay and on the fourth day, my mom bought me a long yellow silk skirt and invited a bunch of family and friends to a luncheon. Column: Men, please don't mock period parties -- it's really none of your business 30-second read: Period parties are a controversial new trend In the intervening 70-plus years since my grandmother’s elephant ride, the focus had changed. My parents did not intend a teenage marriage for me; it was just a celebration to mark the … [Read more...] about Period parties are a controversial new trend with old roots
