President Salovey Vows that Yale Will ‘Lead the Way’ in Addressing Inequalities

In a lengthy memo distributed today, Yale President Peter Salovey promised sweeping changes at the university, following two weeks of protests and student demands. The letter focuses on taking steps toward what he describes as “a more inclusive Yale.” As reported, students at Yale have used recent events on campus (including an alleged “white girls only” frat party) to call attention to the Ivy League’s long history of exclusion and its apparent crippled support for minority students. In his statement, Salovey wrote that he’s been “moved, challenged, and encouraged” by actions on campus. At least publicly, it seems that Yale is making moves toward fixing some of its deep structural issues that adversely affect minority students. The sound of thousands of students choosing to press rather than ignore the issue in recent weeks has a lot to do with that.
