Only four of 23 patients taken to UAB Hospital from last week’s bus crash in Winston County remained hospitalized Monday. The Blazer Express bus, operated by First Transit, crashed midday Friday near Arley. The bus was carrying 26 pediatric interns returning from an annual retreat at Camp McDowell. The group had decided to spend the afternoon at Smith Lake. Alabama State Troopers said the bus was navigating a steep hill and going through an intersection before it hit a rock and then a tree. A mother of one of the interns said her daughter told her that the brakes went out on the bus shortly before it crashed. UAB Hospital received 21 people from the accident scene, and Cullman Regional Medical Center received six patients. Four of those patients were examined, treated if necessary, and released. The two remaining patients from Cullman Regional were transferred to UAB Friday evening, bringing the total number of patients received at UAB to 23. Of those, a total of 19 patients have been examined, treated if necessary, and released. The conditions of the remaining four admitted patients continue to range from good to fair, according to a UAB statement released Monday afternoon. Troopers on Monday said the investigation is still on going with details still being gathered.
