Antonio Nunez is on a road trip. The former Liverpool attacking midfielder has driven 1,600 miles from the port city of Huelva in south west Spain. Sat in the Hope Street Hotel a few hours before the Reds’ Premier League clash with Fulham he’s surrounded by supporters waiting to catch a glimpse of Jurgen Klopp’s stars before they board the coach to Anfield. Few realise that there is a 2005 Champions League winner in their midst. “It’s the first time I’ve been back to Liverpool since I left 13 years ago,” Nunez tells the ECHO. “I am really happy to be here and to see how everything has changed in the city. To return to Anfield again is so special.” Nunez hung up his boots at the age of 39 in May after a four-year stint with Recreativo de Huelva in the third tier of Spanish football. Now he intends to pursue a career in law. He once juggled his degree studies with playing alongside Real Madrid’s Galacticos. “At the moment I have time that I didn’t have before to travel and meet up with some friends in Ireland, Liverpool and London,” he said. “Huelva was my last club and I still have my house there.
