Memphis basketball: Jeremiah Martin’s historic game tainted by end result

Drew Hill Memphis Commercial Appeal Published 9:10 AM EST Feb 3, 2019 TAMPA — Memphis senior Jeremiah Martin walked out of the visitor’s locker room, split a crowd of South Florida fans huddled on the court, and stopped at the scorer’s table while he waited for a radio interview.  The guard’s face didn’t have the look of a player who just set a school record for points in a half. In fact, Martin’s presence went unnoticed by most of the Bulls fans around him. The scene wasn’t typical for a player who just scored a career-high 41 points, all of which came in the second half. It was a forced celebration of something Martin didn’t seem the least bit interested in. “It really doesn’t feel good because we lost,” Martin said. “If we would have won — it would have been great, I would have been happy.” But as he said, he wasn’t happy, and neither was Memphis coach Penny Hardaway. All because Memphis fell at South Florida 84-78 Saturday despite forcing 30 turnovers, getting 41 points from its leading scorer and outscoring the Bulls by 19 in the second half.  But that’s what happens when a team falls behind 27-1 to start the game.
