Mark Milley Meets With Russian General as Concerns Remain Over China Calls

General Mark Milley, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, met with General Valery Gerasimov, chief of the Russian General Staff, as concerns over Milley’s calls to China during the Trump era remain. Milley announced last week that he had made two calls to General Li Zuocheng of the People’s Liberation Army during the last months of Donald Trump ‘s presidency to assure China that the U.S. would not suddenly launch an attack. Milley is expected to face questioning over the phone calls on September 28 when he and U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin are scheduled to testify before the Senate Armed Services Committee regarding the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. During the six-hour meeting between Milley and Gerasimov on Wednesday in Helsinki, Finland, the military leaders discussed efforts by the U.S. to secure basing rights and other counterterrorism support in countries bordering Afghanistan—efforts to which Moscow has been opposed.
