JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A Jeep apparently went airborne Monday and hit a power pole off Memorial Park Road on Jacksonville's Westside, according to witnesses who saw the crash. The crash was reported just after 2 p.m. near the intersection of Westgate Drive. The front of the Jeep appeared to have collapsed on impact with the pole, and the top had to be removed to pull the driver from the vehicle. The witnesses said the Jeep went airborne into a ditch before hitting the pole, which had a visible gouge about 8 feet off the ground. Thomas Blakeney, who lives nearby, was inside his home sleeping when he heard the crash. "It sounded like a sonic boom," Blakeney said. Another witness told News4Jax the driver appeared to be severely hurt. It's unclear how many people were in the Jeep. Darin Hinton, a neighbor, said speeding is an issue along the roadway. Buses blocked by ‘selfish’ drivers parking illegally
DRIVERS in Henley have been dubbed “selfish” for blocking buses by parking on double yellow lines. There have been a number of incidents in which buses travelling through the town have been delayed by vehicles parked at the roadside, including some which were on double yellow lines or loading bays. Stefan Gawrysiak, who is chairman of the town council’s transport strategy group, said it was an ongoing problem. The worst affected areas were around the town hall in Market Place, Friday Street and York Road, which is an access road to Townlands Memorial Hospital. If parked cars don’t leave enough room, the bus drivers can have trouble manoeuvring around corners and along narrow streets and sometimes have to wait for the vehicles to be moved. National Guard master sergeant nearing retirement dies in head-on crash
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A 58-year-old man riding a motorcycle home from his job as an aircraft mechanic with the Florida Air National Guard died Tuesday afternoon when state troopers said a car veered into his lane on Lem Turner Road near Interstate 295. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Hyundai Genesis was headed south on Lem Turner near Terrell Road about 2:30 p.m. when the car veered from its lane and entered the northbound lane, hitting Steward Lee Bowles' Harley-Davidson motorcycle. Bowles, of Jacksonville, died at the scene. Charges are pending the driver who struck Bowles, according to the FHP. A single cross now stands at the site of the crash. Family members said Bowles, who went by the first name Lee, was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
